A must-do for lovers of historic tours! Visit and climb the ancient site of Sigiriya and/or the Pidurangala Lion Rock for the breathtaking view of the city. Additionally, the Dambulla Golden Cave Temple, a world heritage site and the largest & best preserved ancient cave temple in Sri Lanka.

SIGIRIYA LION ROCK

Sigiriya or Lion Rock is an ancient rock fortress nearly 200 metres (660 ft) high. It is a site of historical and archaeological. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle, King Kasyapa built his new capital and royal palace on the top of this rock. He also built a gateway in the form of a massive lion on a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock. Sigiriya is a World Heritage Site and one of the best preserved examples of ancient urban planning.

PIDURANGALA ROCK

Climb the nearby Pidurangala Rock where you walk through nature – forested area and reach the top where you can enjoy the breath-taking view of the landscape and Sigiriya Lion Rock at the top. It is believed that the history of Pidurangala Vihara is goes back beyond to the first and second century BC. During that period, Pidurangala was used as a Buddhist monastery and became a place of prominence during the reign of King Kasyapa.

DAMBULLA GOLDEN CAVE TEMPLE

Dambulla cave also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla is a World Heritage Site, situated in the central part of the country. This temple complex dates back to the first century BCE. It is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. The rock towers 160 m over the surrounding plains. There are more than 80 documented caves in the surrounding area. Major attractions are spread over five caves, which contain statues and paintings. These paintings and statues are related to Gautama Buddha and his life. There are a total of 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings and four statues of gods and goddesses.
